Three Key Reasons to Invest in a Whelping Box

Animal Transit |Boxes Ltd • 8 July 2021

Many dog owners have turned to makeshift whelping boxes in recent years but there are three key reasons why investing in a whelping box is safer, more convenient, and potentially cheaper in the long run.

Safety

Whilst many dog owners choose to make their own whelping box, this generally isn’t a recommended practice and investing in a purpose-built whelping box is safer for multiple reasons. First and foremost, they are built with sanitary properties in mind. Rather than cardboard, wooden boxes, or that old dusty plastic box from the attic, whelping boxes are made with regular cleaning factored into their design. They are also durability-oriented, as the last thing anybody needs is a great puppy escape!

Top tip: If you need to visit the vets either during or after your dog’s pregnancy, take your whelping box with you. Its familiar scent will ease the dog, the puppies, and hopefully the owner too - all of which makes for a safer visit.

Customisability

In this context, ‘customisability’ is in reference to practical additions which improve safety and convenience rather than cool patterns and bright colours. Usefully, there are a handful of standard sized whelping boxes which range from a small to an XL for most customers to choose from.

For those who have more specific requirements or awkward dimensions, then a custom whelping box can be constructed to meet these necessities. For travellers, or those with restricted living space, then a collapsible whelping box might be particularly useful.

Why Does Customisability Matter?

Importantly, the option to purchase a customised whelping box means that you can own a whelping box with all the above safety benefits whilst simultaneously having it optimized for your specific requirements - why would you ever need to go makeshift?

Plus, if you change your mind at a later date then most forms of customisation can be added further down the line, which only makes them more versatile. For instance, you may wish to install a temperature control feature for dogs with more or less hair than average, or for particularly hot or cold seasons. A set of wheels might also be a good addition allowing the box to be moved around the home in a safer and easier way. Customisable options like these are important because they only add to the relative health of the dog and its litter in the long run.

Savings

Whelping boxes are a good option for those who anticipate numerous litters. Whether you’re a breeder, a trainer, or an owner whose dogs frequently get pregnant, whelping boxes are a one-time investment which are very durable. They can also be used as a puppy pen in the first few weeks of the puppies’ lives - not having to buy a dedicated puppy pen saves money as well as space. It also means that the dog and its puppies have more opportunity to interact which is better for both their health.

For example, if you own the collapsible whelping box then the dog and its litter can be transported much more easily to other locations and they will still have their own private space.

All in all, buying a whelping box is an investment in safety and convenience. Plus, with a huge potential for customisation they are more versatile than ever. For more information on whelping boxes get in touch with us here at Animal Transit Boxes.
